EU imposes duties on Chinese electric cars, what does this mean for Ukrainian logistics?

Member countries of the European Union have agreed to impose tariffs on imported Chinese electric vehicles, endorsing the European Commission’s initiative to alter its customs policy. Despite opposition from Germany, Hungary, Malta, Slovenia, and Slovakia, the majority of EU nations supported the decision aimed at protecting European manufacturers from China’s aggressive market expansion. In 2023, China’s export of electric vehicles to the EU surged by 70%, benefiting from substantial government subsidies that allow prices to be about 20% lower than European counterparts.

This decision also means that the supply of these vehicles will route through Ukraine, thereby improving the country’s logistics situation. Meanwhile, Chinese investors are considering establishing manufacturing plants in Europe, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape of the electric vehicle market.
